This week, opera takes centre stage. Where congresses, annual general meetings and corporate strategy discussions usually take place, music stands, costumes and directors' desks now fill the rooms. Meeting rooms become dressing rooms. Event spaces are transformed into rehearsal venues. And for the coming weeks, Festspielhaus Bregenz becomes the home of the Bregenz Festival. Until the end of August, the building follows the rhythm of the performing arts.
When the Building Changes Its Rhythm
Within just a few days, Festspielhaus Bregenz undergoes a noticeable transformation. The number of people working in the building increases from around 140 to more than 1,000. Instead of congress delegates, the corridors are now shared by singers, orchestra members, directors, costume designers, technicians and production teams. Focused business meetings give way to musical rehearsals, while structured agendas are replaced by creative collaboration.
The building becomes louder, more colourful and more vibrant. For the Festspielhaus team, this seasonal change is nothing new. They move effortlessly between congress operations and the festival season, between business events and opera productions. While the atmosphere changes, one thing remains the same: the expertise required to deliver complex events successfully.
What the Festival Season Leaves Behind
Many people are unaware that the Festspielhaus team supports not only more than 200 conferences, corporate events, concerts and social events every year, but also plays an essential role in delivering the artistic productions of the Bregenz Festival.
The floating stage defines much of their work. Few event venues demand higher standards of technical expertise, organisation and precision. Wind, changing weather conditions and a stage located in the middle of Lake Constance make every production unique. Lighting, sound, video, safety and logistics must work together seamlessly.
Delivering opera performances for thousands of visitors under these conditions develops a unique understanding of event planning, operational processes, dramaturgy and the many details that guests rarely notice - but which ultimately determine whether an event is a success.
Experience That Benefits the Whole Year
Working on the Bregenz Festival sharpens the team's eye for staging and production. Every summer brings new ideas, innovative technical solutions and fresh perspectives on how to bring people together and create memorable experiences. This knowledge extends far beyond the floating stage. It is applied throughout the year to congresses, conferences, annual general meetings and gala evenings.
So, as rehearsals begin over the coming days, they mark far more than the preparation for another outstanding cultural summer. Festspielhaus Bregenz takes on a new role while gaining valuable experience that benefits organisers and guests throughout the year.
We wish the Bregenz Festival a fantastic summer!
