Celebrating the Next Generation

Why Festspielhaus Bregenz is more than just an “Excellent Apprenticeship Company” on paper.

Today’s young professionals are looking for more than a job. They want to take responsibility, be part of a team, and feel that someone believes in them. This is precisely what defines the apprenticeship programme at Festspielhaus Bregenz - and the reason why the venue was once again awarded the title of “Excellent Apprenticeship Company” in 2025. For those in charge, this honour is more than recognition - it’s a commitment: we invest time in training. And we do it gladly.

A Career Begins with Trust

"Working with curious and motivated young people from the start of their career journey is incredibly rewarding," says Julia Bitschnau, apprenticeship trainer at Festspielhaus Bregenz. "We get to witness them grow in confidence, develop professionally, and mature. By the end of the apprenticeship, we’re truly proud of how far they’ve come. And beyond that, I really enjoy their light-hearted nature, which brings joy to our workdays."

At the Technical Desk with Heart and Voice – Fiona Splinter

One apprentice currently on this journey is 19-year-old Fiona Splinter. Since August 2024, she has been training as an event technician. Her passion for sound and technology started early - she first gained experience in her father’s recording studio and later performed on stage with her band, Reality Break. Moving behind the scenes wasn’t a break in direction - it was a natural next step. And Festspielhaus Bregenz? The perfect stage to launch her career.

"I really enjoy everything about my job," says Fiona. She’s especially excited by the variety – one day she’s working with lighting, the next with audio or multimedia. She’s learning how to programme lighting equipment, lay cables, and optimise acoustics. And most of all, what it means to be part of something bigger. Whether it’s an opera on the lake stage, a concert, gala evening, graduation ball or a conference – teamwork is always key. Alongside it: a strong focus on quality and reliability.

Lights, Sound, Stage – and a Lot of Team Spirit

As someone who considers herself quite shy, Fiona found working in a team to be a challenge at first. "But the teamwork really helped me grow," she says. She also lists a few other highlights: a great atmosphere, fair work schedules, early holiday planning, and numerous employee benefits - from public transport passes to performance bonuses and team trips, the most recent one to Malta. "That really makes a big difference," she says.

At Festspielhaus Bregenz, apprenticeships are not just a routine - they are part of everyday life. Young people are given real responsibility, encouraged to contribute ideas, make mistakes, and learn what professionalism truly means. Experienced colleagues not only share technical knowledge but also support apprentices on a personal level. Because in the end, it’s not just about training - it’s about personal development.

As for Fiona’s future? She’s not sure yet. Perhaps she’ll go on tour with a band. Or maybe she’ll stay at Festspielhaus Bregenz. One thing is clear: the apprenticeship has opened doors - and shown her just how much she’s capable of.
